No matter our heritage or mother tongue, we all share the same emotional origin.

Director | OKJ

OKJ (Ong Kah Jing / 王傢靖), the Singapore-based director of OKJ Works, has always been bullish about documentaries. Despite a lack of formal training, his sheer passion for connecting people through stories and experiences – particularly those that revolve around cultural heritage and humanity – has seen him and his works win accolades, earn the support of the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism and even an honorable mention by then-Education Minister Chan Chun Sing. His unique music documentary, A Feeling of Music Playing, was picked up for Singapore Airlines' KrisWorld for the whole world to see and enjoy in Q4 2024. Beyond his own films, he is committed to creating new experiences for audiences and elevating the works of other documentary storytellers.

Driven by a curiosity about the intense passion musicians bring to their performances, OKJ embarked on a self-funded journey to capture an elusive emotion on screen. ‘A Feeling of Music Playing’ was specifically filmed to translate the visceral feeling of making music for non-musicians.The independent documentary captures a jam session by an intercultural ensemble inside
Eng Tiang Huat Cultural Shop in Geylang. It was the first time this specific group of musicians had ever played together: Mohamed Faizal on the Chinese guzheng, Govin Tan on the tabla, Gildon Choo on the pipa, Wei Jie Tong on the dizi, and third-generation shop owner Jeffrey Eng.Eng Tiang Huat started its business in the 1930s, growing to become one of Singapore’s best-known suppliers of traditional Chinese instruments. Jeffrey’s grandfather and then his father both regularly welcomed anyone who loved music into the shop for unplanned jam sessions, cultivating a vibrant community hub.As students and professionals face mounting academic pressure and heavy workloads, ‘A Feeling of Music Playing’ offers a visual metaphor for navigating stress. By showcasing a microcosm of musicians jamming together, the documentary reminds audiences that the active pursuit of play is an essential counterbalance to the friction of modern life.“Communication is part of our everyday lives, unfolding across different frequencies, rhythms and notes. Sometimes, it is carefully scripted and scored; at other times, it is spontaneous and organic, much like a jamming session. Partnering with Director OKJ on this series offers an opportunity to invite audiences to reflect on how we can listen more attentively to one another, find common ground, and create harmony even when we begin on seemingly different notes,” said Melvin Loh, Mediator, Advocate and Educator.“Cinema is evolving, and its greatest strength has always been bringing people together into the same room.
